The challenge
Households in three Adaklu communities walk over an hour each way for water that is not reliably safe. Two existing boreholes are broken; a third was never completed. The nearest functioning source serves several communities at once, and the queue at dawn regularly runs to two hours. Children arrive at school late or not at all, and diarrhoeal illness is a recurring cost to families with no margin.
The intervention
Working with local churches and the district assembly, the project will rehabilitate the two broken boreholes, complete the third, install hand-washing stations at two basic schools, and train a community water committee in each community to collect a small maintenance levy and carry out repairs.
Communities contribute labour and site preparation. The committees are formed and trained before construction begins, not after — because maintenance, not construction, is where projects like this usually fail.
